Austonia
Documentary Film
Director/Producer (2015)
This film tells the shared stories of the Estonian-Australian communities on the East coast of Australia. Each speaker shares a common thread in that they or their ancestors first came to Australia to escape the Soviet occupation of their homeland. Now these people come together to discuss how they kept their traditions alive after such hardships, and what ways they choose to engage in their heritage as their cultural relevance becomes less and less important.
What does it mean to be Estonian in modern Australia? How do the younger generations connect with older traditions? What direction should the communities take to engage interest?
